Preparing for a vinyl graphic installation; tips to preparing your vehicle.

1. Inspect Your Vehicle For Surface Imperfections

We don’t recommend a partial wrap to a vehicle with surface imperfections such as paint scratches, dents, or rust. The vinyl will contour to the surface of your vehicle and surface imperfections will reduce the life of your graphics. Vinyl graphics on vehicles can last seven to 10 years according to 3M and Avery Dennison. This depends on the quality of the material used, the vehicle preparation and the aftercare.

2. Wash Your Vehicle

Make sure your vehicle is clean before installation. Your vehicle must be free of dirt, mud, was, oil, protective products and other agents that might prevent the vinyl from properly adhering to the surface of your vehicle during installation. If your vehicle is not properly cleaned, you may be charged a cleaning fee.

The First Weeks

Avoid washing your vehicle for five days after installation. Ideally, keep your vehicle out of the rain too, but this is the Northwest so do your best. It is important to allow any moisture between the paint surface and the vinyl film to completely evaporate. This allows the adhesive to set correctly and to avoid any edge lift. Excessive exposure to water can interfere with this process.

While the film is curing some bubbles or a slight haze in the film may occur. This is perfectly normal and will disappear after 1 to 3 weeks with normal vehicle use and exposure to sunlight.
Remove dirt and stains such as bird droppings and bug guts promptly. We recommend a normal car wash routine once the film has cured (1 to 3 weeks).

  • Hand Washing – Hand washing is the safest way to keep your vehicle graphics looking great.
  • Spot Cleaning – Prompt spot cleaning of bird droppings and bugs using a soft cloth and mild detergent or a solution of 25% diluted rubbing alcohol and water.
  • Carwashes – Automatic carwashes are ok if you use a brushless car wash with spray only. We recommend you avoid using the wax option as they may contain petroleum ingredients that can cause edge lift.
  • Pressure Washing – We do not recommend this method but if you must keep the pressure below 1200 psi, keep the water temp cool, use a wide-angle nozzle and keep the nozzle perpendicular to the surface and at least 12 inches away.
